An important inclusion -- Students agency in IB PYP( Students perspective )

Student agency is an importatnt inclusion in IB curriculum. Why do we need it?

Well, at this time where the education system has changed a lot, to provide the voice -- choice -- action to the students for their learning is essential. Teacchers and students in the class work collaboratively. There are many positive factors for students agency. Lets explore it!!

There are many pros for the students agency in the classroom which makes them strong enough to have the agency outside as well.

As an IB educator, I belive when learners are getting the opportunities on their learning somehow they feel valued and responsible for the learning. A small example if when I asked my students to design the classroom how they want to decorate and place the furniture the students were just enthusiaclly active. They also decorat the door which provide them immense happiness as well.

Students are alearning in the class so we need to know how they learn and what they like to learn. Though we have a structure concepts in each year level which we need to teach but I belive as an educator I can plan in such a way so that I can include learners choice. For example: when learners are going to make a presentation I provide them the choice to select the option. Teachers can also modifify the plan and make the students understand if he/she wants them to in a particular way. Students are also getting the choice and trust of their learning. In my class when students are reading they can read on their favorite place in the class. They can lie down or sit down to enjoy their learning. Some students want a quite area only by themselves which gave them the trust that they can read and enjoy. Sometimes if students are making wrong choices they can reflect and findput the way which will not hinder their learning further. When students observe that teacher is providing them the space to choose in the teaching and learning area, they feel valued. Students can also plan someday for their own learning which I am planning to do after Covid 19 pandemic. On that day teacher can provide them the plan and they actually can plan when and what they want to learn. They can explore to their interest and can add some more creative activities on that day.

I think, students agency provide the students to make a trusted bond between the teachers and learners. Teacers also learn a lot from the students and can enjoy eatchng them learn happily. I will be talking about teachers perspective in mu next post ... so read and enjoy.
